Dr. Laxman Singh Rathore

former Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. Dr. Rathore was Permanent Representative (Ambassador) of India with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) during 2013 to 2017 and he served many international bodies, in various capacities. Some of the positions are as under;

  • Member management board, WMO Commission for Agriculture Meteorology
  • Chairman, Governing Council of SAARC Meteorological Research Centre, Dhaka
  • Co-Chair, Working Group for Indo-US co-operation on ‘Weather and Climate Forecasting for Crop Management’
  • Visiting Scientist, University of Nebraska, Nebraska, USA, as UN fellow
  • Member, Task Team on capacity building in meteorology and allied sciences for Regional Association II (Asia) of WMO
  • Member, High level delegation of India for Indo-US collaboration on meteorological application for risk reduction in agriculture.

He served National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, Department of Science and Technology and India Meteorological Department before becoming Director General of Meteorology on 1st February 2012. He made significant contribution in improving the skill of weather forecasting, particularly the extreme weather events like cyclones, heavy rainfall, extreme temperatures etc. leading to enhancing the use and impact of meteorological information in various sectors of economic activities and also saving lives and properties. He played leading role in development of agro-meteorological advisory service in India which is considered a unique service having huge economic impact. He participated in 3rd scientific expedition to Antarctica and visited about two dozen countries to discharge official functions. He has published more than 100 research papers, wrote 11 books and 41 book chapters. He lead many research programs on meteorology and agrometeorology. He was elected President of Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) and Association of Agrometeorologists and is Fellow of IMS. He has been conferred with many awards including;

  • Appreciation of WMO for accurate prediction and warnings of tropical cyclones
  • Appreciation from Indian Army for rendering excellent support for expeditions

  • Association of Agrometeorologist Award for distinguished services in AgroMet.

He served on many national committees, Governing Boards/Councils of various institutions and professional societies.  He guided five students for award of PhD degree from renowned universities of India including IIT Delhi and BHU, Varanasi.
